New/Old Server?
« on: January 26, 2021, 11:30:35 am »
Hi, all.

It's been quite a while since I was on the TGIF network. I currently have my Zumspot running v4.1.2 with dashboard v20210125. I remember seeing things about TGIF moving to a new server. I haven't reconfigured my Zumspot for about a year. Is there anything I have to change to continue to be able to communicate on TGIF? I have it on now, and it's communicating just fine. Just making sure I don't get left behind.

Thanks in advance.

Hi, and welcome back to the TGIF network.

Short answer: No, you shouldn't have to change anything to continue to be able to communicate on TGIF (with some caveats...keep reading LOL).

Longer answer: The new server we're moving to has all kinds of new enhancements.  One key enhancement is the ability of the trustee of each individual talkgroup to have nearly complete discretion over who can use their talkgroup, who cannot, etc.

For example: A Talkgroup trustee can choose to only allow only REGISTERED TGIF server users to talk on their talkgroup and block all those who aren't registered.  Since registered users get a unique password for their hotspot(s) on TGIF, if someone comes along and bootlegs another person's callsign/DMRID to cause interference/other mischief, they'd be unable to do so on those talkgroups.  And each talkgroup can turn that feature on and off at will.

That said, most talkgroups are likely to remain open for registered and unregistered folks alike, most of the time.  But registration is highly recommended for maximum flexibility, access to other enhancements on the server, etc.

So, summary and recommendation: The server switch will not leave you behind.  But I'd highly recommend that you visit https://prime.tgif.network/ and register.  Once your registration is approved, you'll have the ability to generate that unique password for your hotspot that will give you carte blanche on virtually any talkgroup after the switch.

Hope that helps.
