Title: How to use WIFI Page on HotSpot
Post by: N4GWB on November 18, 2019, 02:56:32 am
I have not been able to figure out how to fully use the WIFI page.  I am able to scan and see available networks, but I have yet to successfully connect to any networks found in the scan.

For example, my office has a "guest" SSID that requires no password nor is there a capture portable to log in or accept terms.  So, I want to use the hotspot to scan, find, and connect to this network that is not known in the Pi-Star Wife config and begin working.

How do I accomplish this?  The LOAD, SAVE, and APPLY PROFILES buttons have me confused.

I have tried selecting the SSID in the found networks and then clicked save but that did not work.  I tried the Apply Profiles button also,  no go.

Maybe I am just way too literal, but I don't get it.

Thanks,

Hi Bill,

It's my understanding that Pi-Star requires encryption (IE A password) for the WIFI connection.  That might explain why you are unable to connect to a fully "open" network (IE One that doesn't require any password).

Update: It seems that there is a way to get Pi-Star to connect to open networks, although it won't do this "out of the box."

Please refer to this post on the Pi-Star forum for additional details: https://forum.pistar.uk/viewtopic.php?f=40&t=2267

[Off Topic]

I found this progression to be fascinating:

1) My statement here: "It's my understanding that Pi-Star requires encryption (IE A password) for the WIFI connection."

2) N4GWB over on the Pi-Star forum: "Someone suggested in another forum that PI-Star will not connect to Wifi that does not have a password."

3) KE7FNS over on the Pi-Star forum: "Not true at all, that is simply poor advice from people that don't understand how the underlying linux system actually functions."

Wow.  Just.  Wow.  Di-Di-Di Dah-Di-Dah.
