TGIF Friday Night Net – November 21, 2025
Talkgroup 31665 • Net Control: Eric KC8UKB (Auglaize County, Ohio)
Topic: Code Plugs

Expanded Opening Remarks
Good evening ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the TGIF Friday Night Net.
We meet here every Friday night at 8:30 p.m. Eastern Standard Time on the TGIF server, Talkgroup 31665, to talk about a chosen topic and anything else related to amateur radio.
Tonight’s subject is code plugs.
Emergency traffic may be indicated by a triple break and will be accepted at any time during the net. Please remember this is a directed net, so please only transmit when directed to do so by the net control station.
Does anybody have any announcements, news, or important information for the net? … Nothing heard.
Now on to check-ins…

Main Topic Discussion – Code Plugs
K4WZV Robert – The “Ad-Hoc Revolution”
• 2,000+ talkgroups = impossible to keep codeplugs current
• Get a radio with true manual/ad-hoc dialing (Anytone 878/868, TYT MD-UV380 + OpenGD77, etc.)
• Punch in any TG from the keypad – no pre-programming needed
• Three golden steps for any codeplug:

Create Digital Contacts
Create the Channel
Add channel to a Zone
• Anytone tip: set manual-dial hang-time to “infinite”

VE3RD Phil – Uses one zone and the DMRGateway-6 such that all most used TG's both TGIF and MNET are available in a short twist of the channel knob(some packet loss)
WC7D – Shared radio with wife
• Two identical channels except different DMR-ID & callsign → just turn the knob to switch users
WB3IHY Joe – Two priceless habits
• Always save incremental dated copies (2025-11-21-v1, -v2, etc.)
• Every codeplug must have the network parrot: TGIF = 9998 or 31000
W4JLP – Spreadsheet power editing
• Export → edit hundreds of lines in Excel/Google Sheets → re-import
K4WZV Robert (again) – Critical warning
• CPS version MUST match firmware version exactly (especially Anytone) or you’ll have weird bugs/brick the radio

Marketplace
KF5MG – Wants to trade/sell several Connect Systems radios & hotspots for a Motorola VHF mobile (analog or DMR – flexible)

Closing Remarks
Before we close the net I need to thank the people that make the TGIF network possible…
• Founder Mitch Savage EA7KDO (SK) – started it all with one Raspberry Pi
• James KH6S (SK) – Nextion hotspot pioneer
• Current team: KG5RKI • G7LRR • N3MEL • VE3JAR • VE3RD • forum team

TGIF Amateur Radio Net
Friday 14 November 2025 • Talk Group 31665 • 8:30 PM Eastern
Net Control: Steve W2SHR – Outer Banks, North Carolina

Opening Preamble
“Good evening everyone and welcome to the TGIF Amateur Radio Net — Thank God It’s Friday!
This is Steve, W2SHR, coming to you from the beautiful Outer Banks of North Carolina, where the sand is white, the water is cold, and the antennas are always swaying in the breeze.

We’re all here on the Mothership, Talk Group 31665, the best little corner of DMR on the planet, thanks to the hard work of Ty, Andy, Robert the Godfather, Phil, Vic, Glenn, and a whole army of volunteers who keep this network humming 24/7.

A few quick reminders before we get rolling:
- This net is open to everyone — licensed amateurs only, please.
- Keep your transmissions short and courteous so everybody gets a chance.
- When you check in, please give your call sign phonetically and your first name.
- If you’re short on time, we’ll have short-time check-ins first.
- And most important — have fun! That’s what this is all about.

We usually run about an hour or a little more. We’ll do check-ins by suffix groups, short-time first, then a marketplace, a round-table topic, Q&A, late check-ins, and wrap it up with some thank-yous.

So grab your coffee, your adult beverage, or whatever keeps you going on a Friday night, settle in, and let’s get this party started!

K4WZV, Godfather, it’s all yours for announcements… or back to net control if we’re ready to roll.”

Network Announcement – K4WZV (Robert, the Godfather)
“All righty, good evening, everybody on the net.
I wish everybody a happy Thanksgiving and all that turkey day coming up,
and appreciate you doing the net, Steve, and you always do a fantastic job.

Important note to make note, as far as I know, the upgrade is done and complete.
On our server, it went pretty flawlessly.
There was one time where it went down for four or five hours for the main part of it,
and there was one other time that it went down for them doing little final tune-ups
and little final switching of the network to the new server.
So everything should be done.
They said it's gonna be through the 14th.
So it is possible the server might pop just for a little bit while they do some of the final stuff.
So the 14th, which is today, is supposed to be the last day,
and they should have everything 100%.
So back to net control, and everybody enjoy our new server farm.
Everything's gonna work just beautifully there.
So everything's faster, more efficient, and things are gonna work great.
Back to net control.
This is K4WZV.”
